Two People Injured in Pitbull Attack

Two elderly people were injured in Elmhurst on Monday evening when two pitbulls attacked them in the front yard of their home. The 63-year-old man sustained serious injuries to his legs and arms, but was in stable condition at Loyola Medical Center. The 70-year-old woman was treated for a dog bite to her arm and then released.  Dog bites are all too common, especially from a breed known to have dangerous tendencies.

Chicagoland Weather Conditions Increase Car Accidents

If you live in the Chicagoland area and surrounding suburbs, then you know how fickle our weather can be. Just yesterday, we were enjoying fifty-degree temperatures and today we are shoveling snow off our sidewalks.

With the expectation that work commutes may be plagued with falling snow, slushy roads, and lowered visibility throughout this winter season, be sure to practice driver safety by slowing down and allowing extra time to travel to your destination. Major rush-hour highways like I-294 (heading to the south suburbs, i.e. Orland Park and Tinley Park) and I-88 (heading to the western suburbs, i.e. Naperville and Downers Grove) are plagued with heavy traffic during these weather conditions and extra caution should be taken.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a car accident, we are here to help! We bring the right experience to help you “weather” these situations. Please call our office at 708-354-9880 or contact us to schedule an appointment to see how we can bring about the resolution you deserve.

The Right Hook

Bicyclists are required to ride on the right side of the road unless safety conditions require them to ride elsewhere.  This rule, known as ride right, puts cyclists in a difficult position when riding in traffic at intersections.  When the motorist makes a right turn and fails to see the cyclist, it hits the cyclists with what is commonly referred to as “the right hook.”  “A right hook is dangerous for a cyclist because they are left with nowhere to go,” noted G. Grant Dixon III, founder of Dixon Law Office.  Grant and his office frequently represent victims of bicycle accidents involving trucks, cars, and buses.  “The driver has the responsibility to see the cyclist and give them the same right-of-way as a car.  Many drivers are distracted or just don’t look.  The results are often tragic,” Grant said.

With extensive experience in the courtroom and the bicycle, Dixon Law Office can help people who have suffered serious and catastrophic injuries get the compensation they need.  Our results prove it.  Call Dixon Law Office at 888-354-9880 or contact us by email today.  We can help.

Dangerous Riders

Television and film have glamorized the dangerous riding by bicycle messengers.  “Bicycle messengers who ride their bikes in a reckless and dangerous way make all people who ride bicycles look like they are dangerous,” said G. Grant Dixon III of the Dixon Law Office, an Illinois law firm that frequently represents bicycle injury victims.   Some States have taken action.  Grant continued, “Illinois has a law that requires bicycle messengers to carry insurance.  It is not much but at least it is a step in the right direction so that when bicycle messengers cause harm, there is some way to compensate the victims.”  The law can be found at 625 Ill.Comp.Stat. § 5/11-1515.

If you or your loved one has been injured in a bicycle accident, please email us or call our office at 708-354-9880 to schedule an appointment with an experienced bicycle accident attorney.   We are here to help you get the compensation you and your family deserve.

Falls from Windows Injure 5,000+ Kids Every Year

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released a study that shows more than 5,100 kids visit emergency rooms each year, suffering injuries after falling from windows.   From 1990 through 2008, a staggering 98,415 children were treated in emergency rooms for injuries from window falls.  Most injured were young children, often falling through closed screens.  “Manufacturers have known for decades that window screens are not strong enough to hold back an inquisitive toddler,” said G. Grant Dixon III.  Grant is the founder of Dixon Law Office and a frequent advocate for children’s injury cases.  Parents assume that bug screens are strong enough to protect their children.  The fact is they are not.  And this is not just a problem in high-rise buildings.  Many of the reported injuries came from falls out of first and second floor windows.

If your child has been injured after falling through a screen, contact Dixon Law Office by email or phone at 888-354-9880.  We have the experience to help you and your family get the compensation the law entitles you to.

Fewer Medical Malpractice Claims, Payments Even Lower

Medical Malpractice

A recent article published by the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that only 1.6% of doctors had claims against them in a year that resulted in payment.  “This article documents what we have been saying for years.  The facts show that doctors rarely get sued and their insurance companies almost never have to make a payment,” said G. Grant Dixon III, founder of Dixon Law OfficeDixon Law Office frequently represents the families of victims killed as a result of medical malpractice.  While the data is somewhat incomplete, the article notes the results are directly contrary to older studies.  The article is titled Malpractice Risk According to Physician Specialty and was published August 18.

This does not mean malpractice is uncommon.  Another study revealed that medical malpractice is the 4th leading preventable cause of death in America.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of medical malpractice, call Dixon Law Office.  They have the experience to  get you and your family the justice you deserve.  Contact them by email or call 708-354-9880.  They can help you.

Heatstroke, A Danger for Athletes

At a time when much of the country suffers from extreme heat, many kids are well into their pre-season training for Fall sports.  “The heat presents a very real danger for everyone but particularly children and student-athletes,” said G. Grant Dixon III, founder of Dixon Law Office.  According to Mayo Clinic, heatstroke is a life-threatening condition that occurs when your body temperature reaches 104 F.  Working out in high temperatures can cause heat stroke.  If it is not treated, heatstroke will cause brain damage, organ failure and eventually death the Mayo Clinic article says.

Sadly, athletes have died from heatstroke during and after football practices, basketball practices, and soccer.  Even professional athletes have died from the effects of extreme heat.  More than 3,400 people died of heat-related causes from 1999 through 2003, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

“In sports, the coaches have a responsibility to know the warning signs of heatstroke.  They also need to take precautions to be sure their athletes are protected,” Grant said.  The signs of heatstroke include confusion, dizziness, fainting, headache, heavy perspiration, nausea; pale and moist or hot, dry skin, weak pulse, and weakness.  Grant continued, “unfortunately, many coaches don’t know – or worse ignore – the warning signs. That’s when people can die.  It can be very serious.”

To protect their athletes, coaches should make sure their athletes take regular breaks during practice and games. Kids need to drink 8 ounces of fluid—preferably water—every 20 minutes, and more after playing.  When students get tired, they need rest.  When it is hot, coaches should supply misting fans to cool off the athletes.  “Most important if for the coaches to be aware of the heat and protect their athletes,” Grant concluded.

If your student-athlete has been injured or killed from a heat-related problem, call us Dixon Law Office.  We know how to handle such cases and can help you or your loved one get the compensation they deserve.

Free Speech, Not Hate Speech

As the entire country mourns the recent shooting in Tucson, Arizona, it is a good time to look at what got Judge Roll killed and Congresswoman Giffords shot.  Below is a link to a good article discussing the two court cases that Judge Roll heard.  After just one of those cases, Judge Roll got over 200 calls including several death threats.

Free speech is protected by the Constitution and vital to a strong democracy.  Speech that includes death threats is not.  That killed of violent rhetoric caused people to die.  That is wrong.  Those who do it should be prosecuted.
