Surgical Checklists Reduce Medical Malpractice
Researchers recently released a study of data provided by the largest medical liability insurer in the Netherlands. The researchers found that nearly ONE THIRD of the mistakes for which claims were made would have been caught by a checklist. Studies show a very small amount of the healthcare cost is from payment on malpractice claims, between 1% and 2.4% of the healthcare spending. However, any reduction in malpractice is good for doctors and patients. As researchers said, surgical checklists not only save lives by preventing medical errors, but they could also make a big dent in medical malpractice claims.
